Lupe Fiasco Retires? Rapper Says He's Done After Chief Keef Attacks Him On Twitter
The Huffington Post | By Kia Makarechi Posted: 09/06/2012 3:21 pm Updated: 09/06/2012 11:38 pm
A bit of troubling news in the world of hip-hop tweets: Lupe Fiasco has tweeted that he is quitting hip-hop in the wake of antagonistic messages and harsh responses to his song "Bitch Bad," which demands other artists reconsider the use of the word in their tracks.
The Twitter account associated with Chief Keef, the Chicago rapper best known for "Don't Like," a song amplified by Kanye West when he snagged it for his upcoming G.O.O.D. Music compilation Cruel Summer, sent out the following tweet on the evening of Sept. 5.

Lupe fiasco a hoe ass nigga And wen I see him I'ma smack him like da lil bitch he is #300
Though Keef later said he was hacked (a familiar excuse to hip-hop fans; Keef also backtracked tweets that attacked Lil Wayne and recently murdered rapper Lil JoJo, the latter of whom Keef mocked after the murder), the message appears to have shaken up Fiasco:

Fiasco has repeatedly called for an end to gang violence in his native Chicago. He had previously said he feared the culture rappers like Keef were perpetuating. "The murder rate in Chicago is skyrocketing and you see who's doing it and perpetrating it, they all look like Chief Keef," Fiasco told Baltimore's 92Q.
The rapper recently broke into tears during an interview with MTV's Sway after being shown a vintage video of his neighborhood. A number of people shown in the video had either been killed or incarcerated. Describing what it was like to see those "ghosts" overwhelmed Fiasco with grief.
"Bitch Bad" has caused some disruption in the field. West took to Twitter for a monologue of his thoughts on the word. West, who has an unreleased song titled "Perfect Bitch" (about his girlfriend Kim Kardashian):
@kanyewest

I usually never tweet questions but I struggle with this so here goes... Is the word BITCH acceptable?
West's tweets are worth a read. He eventually ended his mini-rant by posting Lupe's video.
HuffPost Entertainment has reached out to Fiasco for comment. As a parting thought, here's a line from Fiasco's song "Words I Never Said": "My problem is I'm peaceful, and I believe in the people."

"Bitch Bad" is a complicated grappling with misogyny in popular music and culture, and its effect on children of both genders. But what is not complicated is how Lupe feels about songs he hears on the radio.

LOVE YOU LUPE! You exemplify the saying, "Stand up for what's right, even if you're standing alone!"
Kanye's mom would be prouder of you than him right now!

Rap died like ten years ago. It’s not about making great music anymore. If you have a young daughter that likes rap make sure you know who and what they are listening to, because most of the music is destruction to black women. Good Job Lupe for leaving the devils work alone.

I have always liked Lupe Fiasco, what a shame he is quitting. I've stopped listening to rap music because I have a young daughter and find a lot of the artists to be very negative, although there are a few things I still listen to, I have to be very selective. I find the messages to be very annoying, childish and dumb, "women", money and drugs. I so agree with you Nettrice.

It's his choice, he obviously has a good head on his shoulders and is able to think clearly for himself. He has to do what he feels is right for him. I just hate see him walk away because of cowards. I hope that's not the case. Stay gold, Lupe!

Used to truly be the CNN of the streets. All about the marketing now. Also used to be a live medium, driven by talented freestylers. Now dominated by producers. Hip hop live is now a joke.

When Americans say "rap" they usually mean U.S. rap because hip-hop culture is global and extends beyond our commercial (radio) bubble here in the United States. Back when a much younger LL Cool J battled older veteran Kool Moe Dee it was about the music and no one quit. It would be nice if rappers like Lupe led the movement to build and sustain the culture instead of allowing insignificant rappers to destroy it hip-hop would be in a better space.

We don't know what goes on behind the scenes. He may have tried to change things, but has been unsuccessful. Threats in the hip hop world have been carried out. Sometimes it is a wake up call. Young M.C. left in the 90's because he got tired of the stuff that went on. It is not that simple to be the voice of reason in an angry mob. Look how hard some have tried to get the N word to stop being used. That didn't happen.

Lupe I listened to some rap since I was a teenager and yours was basically the only thing that I came across that I could listen to without feeling incredibly sexist. Please don't quit, you really are a breath of fresh air in the rap culture. Do what Frank Ocean is doing for hiphop, change that scene.

I commend Lupe for speaking out and acknowledging the power of his words and actions. So often, pop culture icons get a pass for being celebrities without being held accountable for the negative energy they put into the world. But Lupe, is being responsible and saying he does not want to partake in the negativity. What's wrong with that? How would you feel if someone used a public forum such as Twitter to personally attack you? So I think Lupe has every right to want out of the commercial music industry. In its current form it's destructive and damaging so as consumers, we should demand better.

i'd keep the good fight and just stop using twitter. but then, what the eff do i know about living that life? i just want more lupe.

In other news: Flo-rida went on CNN and said he didn't know who he was voting for. lol

I can see what he means. Today's rap is not really Hip Hop Kulture or hip-hop music, it's pop. But negative pop like as if all Rock music was Death-Metal. The sh@t is whack and I can see why Lupe wants no parts of it. It's pointless and whack to even respond to such foolishness. The idea of perpetuating fake beefs to get air-time is played out and childish. Lupe will probably write some books instead and just tour off his old stuff, at least for awhile.

Hip-POP. Lil Wayne. Nicki. Drake. Flo Rida. Pitbull. LMFAO. Black Eyed Peas. All put out safe, happy bubbly hip-pop being passed off as hip hop and rap.

He get's dissed and quits instead of responding on a track?? That's the origins of hip hop! Diss you, diss me! Good riddance. Your lack of flows will not be missed Lupe. lol

I love Lupe. I don't think the way to solve this issue is to quit. I wish he would start a label and produce more artists similar to him. I don't listen to a lot of rap, but I have all of Lupe's albums and stuff because I to hear what he has to say.

1st & 15 is his label but the problem that he (and a lot of rappers) these days face is that they all run to these major labels and get famous but then complain when these same labels control what they put out. They don't want to go back to grinding it out and putting out the type of music that they want independently.
