Cee Lo Green announces new Goodie Mob album, because he is not at all busy

Cee Lo Green is slowly morphing into the hip-hop James Franco.
Not only is the “F— You” singer still promoting his excellent 2010 solo album The Lady Killer (he’ll be performing the single “Bright Lights Bigger City” at WWE’sSummerSlam show on August 14), but he has also expressed interest in doing another project with Danger Mouse as Gnarls Barkley and is apparently going to be setting up a residency in Las Vegas. Oh, and he is also one of the key players on The Voice (also known as The Only Reason To Watch NBC Anymore).
So even though he had to bow out of his opening slot on the Rihanna tour due to his over-extended schedule, Green is still pushing ahead with yet another project. (And no, he will not be appearing on General Hospital.) Luckily, this one is a home run—the Atlanta native tweeted yesterday that not only would the new Goodie Mob album drop this fall, but that it would be called We Sell Drugs Too.
Along with Outkast, Goodie Mob (consisting of Cee Lo, T-Mo, Big Gipp and Khujo) helped launch the Dirty South revolution in ’90s hip-hop, introducing elements of back-porch grit and gospel-tinged soul into an often stagnant rap universe overcrowded with Diddy productions.Their first two album (1995′s Soul Food and 1998′s Still Standing) are both stone-cold classics, and there are moments on 1999′s World Party that stand out. Cee-Lo left the group shortly after the release of World Party to pursue a solo career, and the rest of the group carried on as a trio (they released one album in that form in 2004′s One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show).

The group reconciled in 2006 and have appeared on stage together on a handful of occasions since then. The combination of Cee-Lo’s continued evolution and the old-school, down-home spitting of the rest of the Goodies is enticing, and as long as the reconstituted Goodie Mob crank out joints like “Black Ice” (from Still Standing), then hip-hop will have an excellent fall:

      Mine too! EXCEPT The Voice is not the best show on NBC. Community, anyone? The Office, Parks and Recreations, and Parenthood are also up there.

    nice work calling out Diddy bc his music has always been terrible….ALWAYS.
    Still Standing is one of the Top Ten Albums all time.
    And you should be watching MEET THE PRESS, not another singing competition.

    Oh I remember when Diddy was all over the charts in 1995, 1996 and even all of 1997 with the songs he’s performed and produced and featured on. But I do remember when OutKast and Goodie Mob came out of nowhere with solid albums and music. That’s why you hear that Atlanta sound on a lot of hip-hop songs these days with that mid-to-slow tempo kind of sounds. It’s not like the more uptempo hip-hop.

      And they better tour with a live band if they go out this time. Saw them in NYC last year and it paled in comparison to when I saw them open for the Roots in like ’98 with their own live band.

        sitsers (though not the extreme culprit), I feel I need to redeem myself…We had been doing fairly large parties, though mostly back-yard bashes, but that all changed 2 years ago. I was discussing with my then-turning-7 daughter what kind of party she’d like that year…bowling, pottery, freakish cartoon place…when I suggested the possibility of just having a few friends over for cake & games. She looked at me like I had two heads and said “But, Mom, that’s not a party!” It was at that moment that I decided that from then on, that’s exactly what my kids would be getting…what I always had growing up.And the funny thing is…they love it!We still do “goody bags”, but those have been redeemed also. No more crappy plastic trinkets that parents dread and throw away as soon as the kids forget about them (like the next day). We go practical. For our Summer/Ice Cream theme party one year, we gave a coupon for a free cone at the local ice cream place tied to a pair of dollar-store flip-flops. For our fall-born daughter’s party last year we gave small pumpkins from a local farm.What really helped, though, was that the girls are now old enough to have a few friends over without having to host all the parents as well. That made a HUGE difference. Now that we have a new Little Brother, I haven’t figured out yet how to handle his birthdays…he may wait until he’s 6 to get one. Let him gripe to his therapist later.
