Recruit and return: Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Notre Dame came within four points of an undefeated season, as two-point losses against Clemson and Stanford left the Fighting Irish short of a place in the national semifinals. Notre Dame holds the nation’s No. 13 recruiting class at this point without many more available spots in the class, but there are still a few names left on the board that could make an already very good class even better.
Key losses: DT Sheldon Day, LB Joe Schmidt, WR Chris Brown, OCNick Martin, DE Romeo Okwara, S Elijah Shoemate, OT Ronnie Stanley*
Instant impact freshman: Notre Dame will lose 12 sacks with the departures of Okwara and Day, so ESPN 300 defensive end Khalid Kareem -- a former Alabama and Michigan State commit -- will likely be given every opportunity to help create a pass rush as a true freshman.
Top 2016 recruits: The offensive line will get a big boost from offensive tackles Liam Eichenberg and Tommy Kraemer, as well as guard Parker Boudreaux -- all ESPN 300 prospects. Athlete Daelin Hayes was a big recruiting win after he decommitted from USC. Wide receiver Chase Claypool has the size, at 6-foot-5, 214 pounds, to play early and safety Donte Vaughn gives Notre Dame seven ESPN 300 prospects. In addition to Boudreaux, running backsTony Jones Jr. and Deon McIntosh and safeties Spencer Perry and Devin Studstill were big recruiting wins out of Florida.
Questions for signing day: Notre Dame holds commitments from California prospects in quarterback Ian Book and safety D.J. Morgan, but the Fighting Irish could make a huge impact in the Golden State as wide receiver Javon McKinley and linebacker Caleb Kelly are still both on the board. Notre Dame has an opportunity to make a statement in California and at the linebacker position, as landing both Kelly and Jeffrey McCulloch could definitely lessen the blow if linebacker Jaylon Smith does make the decision to leave early for the NFL.
